This pop up art at #xoxofest was very moving. Beautiful origami cranes floating lightly on the wind attached to white piping. It’s so peaceful, and yet, the artist was inspired by the literal cages built by Trump, which each crane representing children separated from their families, collecting donations for RAICES.

Watching a cartoon and they said, “Look at this dweeb who likes sci-fi,” and he responded, “Actually, it’s not sci-fi, it’s called ‘speculative fiction’,” and I feel seen.

Goodreads doesn’t store ISBN for Kindle books (or it seems other books added through Amazon).

Goodreads won’t export ASIN numbers, just ISBN. There is no way to get an ISBN from a Goodreads Book Id.

So I had to scrape the Goodreads site to complete data for my own books.

I think one of the most surprising things I tell people is that I don’t watch Game of Thrones.

  1. Wide support in macOS for sharesheet-style extensions, along with better built system supported extensions (why can’t I copy links this way in every app?)
  2. Meaningful improvements to Mail.app. It’s still the most stable mail app, but it feels really stagnant.
  3. A unified language for app design, such that the macOS native look and the iOS native look begin to converge. I care a lot about the usability standards on macOS, but the actual look of a standard “mac app” is aging. Also, there’s little precious about that compared to things like standard Menu items and shortcuts, how the title bars work with files, etc.
  4. New entitlements, widely available for Mac App Store apps.
  5. Improvements to performance monitoring, maybe even some options to allow macOS to kill apps more aggressively ala iOS that can be optionally turned on. I want to know more about what is crufting up my system and I want more incentive for apps to be better written.
  6. New tiling options for window management rather than just full screen or full screen L/R.

How powerful are the network effects of Facebook? We’ll find out over the next few years. This kind of reputation drop is definitely an existential threat. om.co/2019/03/1…

All I want for iOS 13 is auto-removal of expired boarding passes.

New bookshelves ❤️. @westminsterfox and I have always thought built-ins belonged on this wall and now we have them. Our books are out of boxes for the first time in years and it’s clear we need to buy more.

New project— buy nicely printed editions of everything I’ve read that’s 4 stars and up on Goodreads I’ve only got on Kindle. Also, time to buy the rest of Absolute Sandman, I think.

Small, anonymous, interest-based, communities online was where the internet was at its best and we’ve largely lost those.

Hopped on a call before anyone else was on. Muted call and started playing guitar while I waited. Turns out I muted my speakers instead of my microphone so they were all listening and I couldn’t hear them say we could start meeting.

Oops?

Five years ago today, I asked a question at a conference and it changed the course of my life.

Road a bike up a bit from the beach to Diamond Head Trail. A long way up, but worth it. Killer views of a large crater and the southern beaches of Oahu.

The best falafel is always green inside.

Back home after a weekend run up to NYC. I’m always sad when I take Amtrak along the Northeast Corridor. The whole experience is a reminder of how awful transit is in the US. As poorly done just about every part of CAHSR seemed to be, its recent collapse into a rail way to nowhere is so disheartening.
